College is an incredible opportunity for most people. However, some people would better benefit from other higher education opportunities. How do you know which options are right for you? Let’s take a look.
College is a huge, long-term commitment in exchange for a degree. Most people find college to be the perfect opportunity that will advance them to the career of their choice. For other people, college is nice but will not lead them to their goal.
Attending college has a high payoff. It leads to advanced careers in technical, business, teaching, and specialty fields. However, it doesn’t pay off until you begin your career which won’t happen until after graduation. Until then, it eats up thousands of dollars and requires hundreds of hours of dedicated time and energy.
Try to think of the career that would work best for you. If your dream career requires a degree, then college is the only way to get there, and it’s worth the time, effort, and money. However, if the career you are looking at does not require a degree, then a technical school or trade school might be a better option.
A trade school, or technical college/institute, is a school for people seeking a license or training for a career that does not necessarily require a college degree. Welders, construction workers, Certified Nursing Assistances, Emergency Medical Teams, and other careers do not require a four-year college degree. Instead, they require a license or sometimes a series of licenses and certifications to prove you have the training necessary to do the job.
Trade and technical certifications are much shorter, and usually cost less money than a college tuition. For many people, trade school is a better option than college because it gives them the training they need for the career they want with the freedom of finishing quickly, and getting to work. For other people, trade school is a stepping stone on thier path to college.
There are some people who want a career that you cannot obtain from a trade school certification, however they do not have the freedom to commit to campus attendance. If this sounds lke you, then you’re in luck. There are thousands of online programs available for you to study in your own time wihtout ever having to set foot on a college campus. If you’re good at managing your own time, self-starting, and you’re motivated without a strict schedule, then online school might be a good opiton for you. Be warned, the freedom to study at your own pace might be more of a hinderance than you anticipate. A lot of people feel so free, they forget to get assignments done, chapters read, or even tests taken. Know yourself. If you truly can commit to making yourself study, then online is great. If you know you have a hard time being motivated on your own, then it might be wise to find another option.
Whatever higher education option you choose, you should know that higher education is the gateway to success. It is very difficult to make ends meet in today’s world without some form of higher education. Be it a Ph.D. or a CNA Certification, make your education work for you. Decide what you want, what you can handle, and what option will get you to your goals. Your education, and your path in life have to be driven by you. Before you make your final decision, talk to a few counselors and representatives. They can help you know exactly what you’re getting into. Go after your dreams, and choose the right options for you.
