The Importance of Sleep: Turning Z’s into A’s

A lot of college students get caught up in so many classes, social activities, relationships, family events, work shifts, stress, and study sessions that they find they have to sacrifice a regular part of their day to keep up with everything else. It’s true, you have to make sacrifices to be successful in college, but that sacrifice should never be sleep. Here’s why.

Impaired Learning

New research suggests that sleep deprivation can cause a loss of the connections between neurons. This phenomenon causes you to have trouble retaining new information and remembering old information which makes learning much harder than it needs to be.

Not only does sleep deprivation make it harder to learn, but it is also linked to an increase in depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety can make it harder to sleep and thus the endless cycle continues.

Damaged Relationships

You might think you are a great person for sacrificing a few hours of sleep for your friends, family, or significant other on a regular basis, but you may actually be hurting your relationships in the long run. Sleep deprivation makes most people groggy, impairs their judgment, and might make you irritable. You aren’t giving your relationships quality time if you’re constantly going without sleep. In fact, your lack of sleep might cause you to say or do things you will regret.

Lower Immune System

When you sleep, your body replenishes itself in many ways. Your immune system fights off infection, your body makes new cells, and you rejuvenate. If you do not get enough sleep, you are not giving your body enough time to take care of itself which might cause you to get sick more often. Getting sick more often might mean missing classes, poor performance on tests, and missing out on a lot of great opportunities.

If you have to sacrifice something start cutting out the amount of time you spend on social media, playing video games, or watching TV. Your sleep should be a priority to keep yourself healthy, happy, and performing at your very best. Sleep deprivation is bad for your health. So, catch some Z’s and get ready to take on the world.
